Day 267: Post-It Pad Divas
How do you capture the gorgeous features and fashion of a beautiful woman in the time it takes her to walk past you?
Post-it notes! Pay attention - this little tip is a total game changer!
For years I’ve had the same struggle when I’m out sketching: I miss more than I capture. In the time it takes me to create a nice little sketch of a woman I see; I miss probably a dozen more walking past me.
Finally a solution hit me: fast little little sketches on Post-It pads just to capture her. Take a few notes about the things I want to remember and: BOOM! I can come back to drawing that lovely lady anytime.
These little sketches take me between 1 to 2 minutes to complete (including the written notes). This means I can spend the vast majority of my sketching session actually observing and capturing new divas.

Day 262: Throwback Diva (80min sketch)
I’m sure it’s no surprise that I own a book titled “Va-Va-Voom!”
Inside the pages of that delightful masterpiece is a whole truck load of classic Hollywood pinup photographs. All of Hollywood’s old school bodacious babes are represented.
So I took it upon myself to sit down for 80 minutes and fall in love with Lana Turner.
I wasn’t so much concerned with capturing her likeness as I was with trying out this drawing technique. I limited myself to just 4 french grey markers, a couple colored pencils and a pen.
Good old fashioned fun!

Day 250: Damn, Girl!
This morning Lauren came out of the bedroom and I almost choked on my eggs.
She looked stunning in a tight red top, pearl necklace, black slacks and beige flats.
“Oh my God,” I said. “You look beautiful.”
She really did. So I drew her (in my Moleskine sketchbook) because that’s my favorite thing to do when I see something that lovely.

Wanna know the sexiest thing that’s sitting on my lap?
It’s my gorgeous new multi-media sketchbook that I picked up at Michaels. It’s exactly what I needed to start getting a little more adventurous with my Diva Drawings.
I decided to tackle a multi-media practice sketch of Christine Mendoza (Twitter: @ChrstineMendoza) yesterday. Here’s a few of the in-progress pics. This was done with graphite, marker and watercolor.

Day 243: Who’s that girl? (part 2)
One of the most enjoyable parts of sketching in public is watching people’s reactions to each other.
This follow up to my rough sketch goes out to all you women out there who either know or don’t know about the fan club of men you leave behind you.
This also goes out to all the guys in those fan clubs. I feel you, fellas. Those gorgeous gals can really take your breath away sometimes.

Day 240: Birthday Hero!
Imagine walking into a surprise birthday part and seeing an enormous poster of you as illustrated as a superhero.
I have clients overseas who own an event planning company. They commissioned me to create this illustration for a young woman’s 18th birthday surprise party.
I was given a few reference photos of the young woman and the instructions to illustrate her riding a horse (her favorite activity).They used the illustration to create an oversized poster as part of the decor for the party venue.
They contacted me afterwards to let me know how thrilled she was! I love assignments like this. Of course I count my blessings that I’m lucky enough to draw for a living in the first place but projects like this are extra special for me.
I get a lot of joy from knowing that my work made someone happy on a personal level.

I love it when people get so deep into a joyous moment that they forget to be self conscious!
Whatever she was listening to must have been completely rapturous because she let loose a little shimmy and shake right then and there.
