Happy Sunday!

She was groovin’ in the sketch but now with full color she’s really poppin’!
Have a great weekend!

Day 240: Birthday Hero!
Imagine walking into a surprise birthday part and seeing an enormous poster of you as illustrated as a superhero.
I have clients overseas who own an event planning company. They commissioned me to create this illustration for a young woman’s 18th birthday surprise party.
I was given a few reference photos of the young woman and the instructions to illustrate her riding a horse (her favorite activity). They used the illustration to create an oversized poster as part of the decor for the party venue.
They contacted me afterwards to let me know how thrilled she was! I love assignments like this. Of course I count my blessings that I’m lucky enough to draw for a living in the first place but projects like this are extra special for me.
I get a lot of joy from knowing that my work made someone happy on a personal level.

Day 240: YOU CAN DO IT!
Sometimes the going gets rough and we need a little encouragement.
I hope you’re having an amazing day!

Day 239: Get your groove on
As an artist, these are the moments I live for!
I love it when people get so deep into a joyous moment that they forget to be self conscious!
Whatever she was listening to must have been completely rapturous because she let loose a little shimmy and shake right then and there.

Day 238: Who’s that girl? - Rough Sketch
As an outside observer I see it all the time.
A gorgeous woman passes by a man and rocks his world for a minute. He’s impelled to turn and look at her; as if attempting to hold onto something beautiful that’s quickly slipping away.
Does she know that he’s looking?
Sometimes I think she knows. Other times I’m sure she doesn’t. It’s easy to get so wrapped up in our lives that we fail to notice the effect we have on strangers.
It’s a gift I wish I could give to women everywhere - an ability to see the wake of admirers they leave behind them.

Day 237: Small moments…
Sometimes the things that pass in the blink of an eye can be the most inspiring.
I was at a coffee shop and all done sketching for the day when this young woman walked by and suddenly had to adjust her boot.
A small moment indeed but it was so full of life. I was inspired.
Those small, forgettable moments between the larger events that we remember are weaving the tapestry of our lives. It felt good to capture one.

Day 236: Walkin’ & Textin’ - Rough Sketch
I once saw a hilarious video from a mall security camera that captured someone texting while they walked, tripped & fell right into the mall fountain.
When I sketched this young woman at the mall walking and texting; that video was all I could think about. Well, that and her knockout curves probably.
A rough sketch like this is how I begin the vast majority of the drawings you see posted on this blog. I like to keep it loose and capture the energy of the pose before I think about details of any kind.

Day 235: The cutest way to say you’re upset
Remember in grade school when someone could actually upset you by sticking their tongue out at you?
Pssh! Those days are over but we still regress to that tactic as adults from time to time. The only difference is that now it’s sort of cute.
I saw this young woman punctuate a remark to her boyfriend by sticking her tongue out at him. Adorable!
If Lauren ever did that to me I’d probably just laugh and concede the point. How can I argue with that?

Day 234: Top 10 reasons to bring your sketchbook shopping with your girl
Alright now fellas, this is between you and I. DO NOT tell your girl that we had this conversation. Keep it cool and reap the benefits.
This is a follow up to my post about bringing your sketchbook along on trips to the mall.
I sketched this woman while waiting for Lauren in a shoe store.
Next time your girl wants you to tag along on one of her expeditions through the mall I want you to grab your sketchbook, smile broadly and say:
“Hell yeah, sweetie!”
Here’s why …
1. First of all a positive attitude makes all the difference so stop being such a wet blanket.
2. You’ll be having too much fun sketching to be giving your girl the heavy sigh, the eye roll and be rushing her through every store (P.S. She hates that).
3. She’ll love and appreciate the fact that you’ve found a creative way to make this fun and pleasant for both of you to spend time together.
4. When she tries on clothes you can get inspired and sketch HER! Tell her she looks so incredible that you want to draw her and remember it forever. This one’s pure gold (as long as it’s sincere). Don’t say I never gave you nuthin’.
5. Your sketching skills will improve dramatically because of the pencil mileage you’re putting in. The mall offers dozens of people and character types to sketch.
6. You’re going to build tremendous confidence by sketching in public. Seriously, the value of this is immeasurable.
7. Your observational skills will strengthen. People move around a lot at the mall so you’ll need to learn to memorize what you see to complete the sketch later.
8. You’re going to notice, love and appreciate subtle details about your girl that you didn’t before.
9. Sometimes you’re going to feel like a rock star because strangers are will approach you with compliments.
10. You can’t hold that purse if you’re holding a sketchbook. Win!
There you go, fellas; tuck that list under your hat. Now get out there and improve your art AND your relationship!
P.S. For the ladies who are reading this: yep those are Christian Louboutin shoes in the sketch above. I’m learning to pay attention ;)
